Hello!

We picked up some decent rain over the weekend in some areas — enough to give things a boost. The moisture helped freshen up fields and gave crops a bit of a lift, but another good soaking would go a long way, especially as roots start pushing deeper and looking for more.

That said, with daytime highs hovering around 21°C this week, we’re not racking up a lot of heat units. Crops are coming along, but progress will likely stay on the slow-and-steady side until we get a bit more warmth. Still, the moisture sets us up well — now we just need some sun and heat to keep things moving.

As always, if something isn’t looking quite right or you want a second set of eyes on your fields, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re more than happy to stop by and take a look.

Have a great weekend,

Bru, Jenn and the team at Antara Agronomy

Crop Talk
Field conditions have held up well, and for the most part, application timing has aligned nicely with crop staging. Residual products are still effective, but with more moisture in the mix and temperatures hovering around 21°C, we could see another weed flush if things warm up further.

Canola Watch
Canola is looking solid so far. Most fields have established well, and with the recent rain, the crop has a strong foundation heading into the next stretch. If you haven’t seen any flea beetles by now, odds are you won’t — pressure appears to have tapered off in most areas. Continue to monitor for grasshopper nymphs, especially in drier spots along field edges where they tend to establish early.

Cereal Crops
Cereals are progressing steadily, though cooler temperatures this week have kept growth moderate. Early-seeded fields are around or past the 6-leaf stage and looking good, while later-seeded cereals are reaching the 4–5 leaf mark. Rooting depth is becoming more important — surface moisture is helping, but conditions remain dry deeper down. Be mindful of herbicide timing, as growing points are now above ground in many fields.

Bean Talk
Most edible beans are in the ground and off to a fairly even start. While some patchy areas remain from earlier crusting, overall stands are improving. The weekend rain helped soften the soil, giving seedlings a boost in emergence. Keep an eye on field variability — there are early signs of uneven emergence in heavier soils.

Corn Progress
Corn has reached the 5-leaf stage across most fields. Growth is steady, though cooler temperatures this week have slowed heat unit accumulation. Recent rainfall has supported moisture conditions, but a stretch of warmer weather would help accelerate progress. Stands are generally strong, and the crop is now well-established.

Question of the Week:

Why do my soybeans look like they are leafing out underground, and trying to go the wrong direction?

Trial Tuesday Update:

This week, we were out sampling corn, wheat, and soybeans to take a closer look at what’s happening above & below the ground.

TUESDAY-1

These trials are testing a seed treatment that uses plant hormones to stimulate early root development—with the goal of improving both root systems and, ultimately, yields. By comparing root and shoot biomass between treated and untreated plants, we’ll get a better idea of how effective this treatment is at giving crops a stronger start. Stay tuned as we dig deeper (literally and figuratively) into the results!
