Hello!

After all that rain, it’s great to see some fields starting to green up. Soil crusting is an issue of concern on some fields. There has been a little reseeding of canola and we are watching a few soybean fields with concern. A gentle rain would soften things up and let the last of the crop emerge. Despite all the rain believe it or not, the top few inches are dry again in a number of fields.

The first round of in-crop herbicide spraying is well under way, and the subsoil is feeling recharged. This last week has been a welcome break in the weather — not too hot, not too cold — and that’s giving crops a much-needed chance to get growing again.

Let us know what you’re seeing out there — we’re in the truck and boots on the ground every day, happy to stop in and walk fields with you.

Have a great weekend,

Bru, Jenn and the team at Antara Agronomy

Crop Talk

The last of the edible beans are hitting the ground. Conditions are lining up nicely, and the window is open. With the moisture we’ve had and now some decent warmth, those beans should pop up quickly if they go into a good seedbed.

Canola Watch

We’re seeing moderate flea beetle feeding in some fields of canola right now. It is especially concerning where emergence is a concern due to crusting. It’s a good reminder to keep scouting early and often. The little guys are out in force, and they’re not being picky. Pay close attention to those margins and field edges — that’s often where the pressure starts first.

Cereal Crops

The early-seeded cereals are sitting around the 5-leaf stage, with good tillering. It’s encouraging progress, and for the most part, they’re handling the weather swings pretty well. That cool stretch slowed things down a bit, but they’re picking back up.

Corn Progress

Corn that went in around May 2nd is looking decent, now sitting at about 2-leaf collar, 3–4 leaf stage. The early chill set it back slightly, but the growing point is still protected, and with these warmer days, it should start stretching out soon.

Seeding is 85% complete as of May 27th:

Up from 57% last week, as reported by the provinces agriculture department.
