September 3rd, 2024

Last week, we bid farewell to our two summer scouting students, Zoé and Daphne. They have completed the season with us and will be heading back to school next week, entering their second year of the Diploma in Agriculture. Thank you for your hard work over the summer!

Surface Drainage Fall 2024

With fall work underway we are busy preparing surface drainage maps for growers. There are many options on the market today that make surface drainage easier. We can help prepare surface drainage maps using provincial LIADR imagery or your own RTK data that can run off your phone, tablet or screen in the tractor.

Have a great week!

Bru and Jenn

Top 5 - This Week:

  1.  Waterhemp grows faster than other pigweeds. If you haven't checked your fields in a week or two, check again!
  2. Bug pressure continues to be minimal.
  3. Early soil test results are averaging below 20lbs in the top 2 feet. Mostly cereal fields. High yields coupled with weather that favored low mineralization / high denitrification. This helps explain a trend we are seeing with  yield responses on fields that had higher available N levels.
  4. Cereal yields continue to impress across the board! Canola is more variable with verticillium stripe and blackleg present in most fields.
  5. Soybeans and edibles have started to turn.

Top 5 - Next Week

  1. Time to be thinking of Fall Rye & Winter Wheat to help manage next year's workload.
  2. Soil sampling is underway, reach out once your field is harvested. We suspect there may be elevated nitrogen levels on some canola ground.
  3. Plan your fall weed control activities. The warm september weather forecasted will give us a good opportunity for some regrowth and fall control.
  4. Look at doing some fall preseed weed control for next year to manage your spring workload.
  5. Plan your fall ditching. With the excess moisture this year its easy to see which areas of the farm need work. We can help you with surface drainage maps (see above)!

Weed Wednesday

with Luke Hemphill - SOW THISTLE

❌ Reproduces only by seed, grows up to 4 ft tall. Short taproot.

⚠️ Recommended to use the highest labelled rate to destroy root system, lower rates often only kill above ground growth.
