Crop Talk
Rain has been hanging around again this week delaying harvest. While it gave some crops another boost, at this stage most fields don’t really need it anymore. The extra moisture and humidity are slowing harvest progress and making it harder for crops to dry down. Corn is about the only crop still happy to soak it up, but for cereals, canola, and beans, drier weather would be preferable.
Looking for a positive, this moisture will go to rebuild soil reserves for next year. Of course, if the rain had held off until September, it would have made getting cereals off the field much easier.
Corn Progress
Corn has been filling very well with many reporting that cobs are full to the tip. Fields continue to hold good color and standability looks strong. With this weather, maturity is moving right along.
Cereal Crops
Cereal harvest is well underway for most but progress has been slow. Hopefully the quality is holding up but swaths will be slow drying. Everyone is struggling with green straw. The cool temps have really kept it going. Most are reluctant to swath due to the weather.
Canola Watch
Canola is changing rapidly. Swathing continues in many fields, and early-seeded acres are curing down nicely. Later-seeded fields are catching up quickly.
Bean Talk
Soybeans and dry beans have taken a big jump with the rain and heat. Canopies look full and pods are setting well. The downside: white mold has been showing up more with the humid stretch, especially in denser canopies. It’s patchy, but worth keeping an eye on as fields push through pod fill.
