Crop Talk
Overall there are many decent to good looking fields out there despite the limited rainfall. This is a testament to the water holding capacity of our soils. We started the year with a full reserve of water but this crop has rooted well and reached deep.
Its no surprise that our Weather Network soil probes show many fields with a depleted profile. TIme will tell how much recharge we receive over the off-season. We may be starting next season with lower reserves.
Corn Progress
Corn is tall, healthy, and moving toward maturity. Cobs are filling nicely, and fields are holding their color well in alot of areas. At this point, some fields are on track for a strong finish if the weather holds.
Cereal Crops
Fall rye harvest should be in the bin by now despite the stop-and-go with the on-again, off-again showers. Other cereal fields are ripening. Desiccation has been applied in some cases, with harvest not far behind. The cool, overcast and smokey cover have really helped fill whats there and quality potential is holding strong.
Canola Watch
Canola is beginning to change across the Valley, with swathing underway. Early fields are beginning to cure, while later-seeded acres are not far behind.
Bean Talk
Soybeans and dry beans are progressing as well. Cool, wet weather, has resulted in white mold showing up in many dry bean AND soybean fields.
