Happy Friday!

Wow, October 18th already! The days, weeks, months,  have been flying by. With harvest wrapping up, we hope you all had a successful season and are able to finish up your fieldwork in a timely manner. We can’t help but be thankful that we are not yet seeing that dreaded S-word ❄️, knowing it could show up any time now.  The rain today was enough moisture for the time being.

Have a great week!

Bru and Jenn

Top 5 - This Week:

  1. Residual nitrate levels are trending lower than normal this year. This is attributed to a number of factors; losses early in the season due to excess moisture, reduced mineralization due to cold weather and high yields.
  2. Canola residuals have the widest range and the highest residuals which reflects the wide range in yields experienced this season. Overall it was probably the worst performing crop in most regions.
  3. Many fields finished with less than 20 lbs residual N indicating that it was likely a limiting factor in many fields.

     4. Here is a picture showing the effect of plant spacing in corn when seed doubles up. Instead of 2 full cobs we end up with one and a bit. The cob on the left looks normal but its short while the cob on the right had poor pollination. Notice all the large kernels. This reduced kernel set coupled with adequate moisture and heat gave some impressive grain fill!

        5. Below is an excellent reference to help you  diagnose abnormal cob development in corn from Ohio State University Extension.  Stay tuned for more about our planting date trials this season.

We need to do better!

⬅️Take a look at this image.

What do you notice?  Correct, good weed control on one side and not on the other.  We need to do better, letting a seed bank build like this is damaging to your acres.
